Mind, Body, Soul & Goal

New Year’s Resolutions

This week every year, people start to think about the past year, the year ahead and what they want to change. That’s right, its New Year’s Resolutions time. I usually either ignore it completely, or struggle to come up with something sustainable, then forget the resolution by January 10. I have even googled ‘new years resolutions’ to give myself ideas on self-improvement and sustainability. There are always the old stand bys – lose weight, exercise more yadda yadda yadda – but this year I have developed my own system for creating some sustainable and positive resolutions and I would like to share it with you.

I started out thinking about this like a professional; I need to set goals for the year and the Resolutions should support the accomplishment of said goals.  Since I am easily overwhelmed, I thought perhaps that general idea is too broad, and I need to narrow it down. Then I had my epiphany. The secret to a well-rounded person is that they take care of themselves Mind, Body and Soul. I decided this is a good time to take it one step further, hence my New Year’s Resolution 4 Part System:

MIND, BODY, SOUL & GOAL

Mind
Personal Development, self-betterment by education or experience. This could be read more books, read more news, take more interest in current events, or take up a new course of study.

Body
Specific goals about exercise, nutrition, hygiene etc. Personal Habits that affect you physically. Those little things you do, day in and day out, that essentially enable you to either stick to a healthy eating plan, or consistently sabotage yourself are HABITS. When it comes to resolutions for habits, I want to break one bad habit and develop one good habit. I don’t recommend making a huge list of habits to make and break.  A sure way to fail is to take on way too much. Remember Bob Wiley: Baby Steps. Be Specific. Also remember it will be easier for you to develop or break a habit that you can track. A generic resolution to snack less isn’t very trackable. If you snack too much now, do you recognize the situations that cause you to snack? Narrow it down as far as you can to a specific situation and resolve to behave better in that specific situation.

Soul
Give your soul a boost, accomplish something you find worthwhile, devote more time to your faith, church, community, friends. Taking care of your soul is different for each of us – you just need to choose something that will make you feel GOOD about yourself.

Goal
Be it personal or business related, something you will WORK for this year. Run a marathon? Get a new job? Start a journal or starting writing a book.

Using these 4 elements, I have created my own New Years Resolutions for 2021 – feel free to read on and help me to stay accountable for my choices, or just use my guide to make your own!

Mind
I will earn my Personal Training Certification and begin instructing at Studio Boss. Success with this resolution will be a 3-fold return. Not only will I be increasing my knowledge about fitness, but I will also be able to then share that knowledge with others and help them on their own personal journeys AND I will be able to give back to Studio Boss and the inspiration it has given to me.

Body
I will STOP: ‘needing something sweet’ after each meal. I will allow myself dessert ONCE a week. After each meal, if I feel myself wanting something, I will attempt the following tactics to avert it: Take a walk. Drink a full glass of water, or a cup of herbal tea or decaf coffee. *Additionally, I will drink my coffee and tea black and unsweetened.

I will START: Drinking 100 ounces of water each day. It is a good habit; I was once good at – when I worked in an office and sat near the water cooler. But since my daily routine has become anything but, my water consumption has dropped precipitously. My wonderful husband once bought me a smart water bottle with a sensor that helped me track the water I was drinking. Then the battery died and instead of getting a new battery, I just stopped using it. How dumb is that!? I am going to find that get a new battery and start tracking again!

Soul
Everyone has heard the term Bucket List – but do you actually have one? I am both supportive and weary of the Bucket List. I worry that if I put something on there but never accomplish it, am I just making a future list of regrets? But if I don’t make a list, then am I just giving myself an easy out by not setting any goals for myself? Will I just float through life without pushing myself or accomplishing anything? For 2021, I resolve to MAKE a bucket list – knowing full well it will be an editable list, items can be added, removed, or repeated. Then I resolve to do at least 1 thing on that list. Start small – more next year! *Don’t worry, I will share my bucket list on my blog soon!

Goal
Since my transition to Real Estate this year, my personal and professional goals have somewhat merged. Success and failure will be more personal in this business since it really will be self-driven. So, my professional and personal goal for 2021 will not be a monetary figure or quantity of sales, but a personally defined goal of success. I will rid myself of ‘Imposter Syndrome’ and become confident in my knowledge, abilities, and experience in Real Estate.
